 You have possibly heard in the news, read on the internet or news paper that the air we need to sustain our planet is getting worse. Did you see China before the olympics? Everyone wearing face mask, beacause just by being outdoors they were exposed to pollution so potent that it was equal to smoking 3 packs of cigarettes  a day. What about the air in side homes in China? Do you think that the people there are wearing masks indoors? The pollution problem is not only Chinas, but the worlds problem. With trees are being cut the deforestation is going to affect all of us. The population is growing which of course leads to the addition of more automobiles on the road, and massive factories to produce all the wares the population demands. The air is starting to become extraordinarily polluted, and the clean air and clean water we take for granted everyday, may soon be unbreathable. The solution to the worlds pollution is going to global efforts from government, and citezens around the world. We  can do our part to help keep our plant clean, and we can also keep ourselves healthier by keeping our indoor air in our homes clean. Pollutants in the home that can also cause acute respiratory problems, and luckly many can be prevented with proper maintance of your homes air filters.

The future is here as some heating companies have abandoned servicing oil furnaces because their liability insurance rates had increased substantially, and the quantity of oil furnaces was declining. If you live out in the country, natural gas is probably not available. The option open when you live rurally is to have a propane company install a tank. They will install the tank and supply line for almost nothing, and then regularly give large rebates on your first fill up.

Many years ago, oil was the fuel of choice for people who didn’t have natural gas service; however oil is not a clean burning fuel. If you have an old oil furnace, and you are thinking of switching to gas does yourself a favor; you might remove the back access panel on the oil furnace, and look at quantity of soot in the heat exchanger. You might be surprised at what you find. Take a look at the bottom one-third of the passageways; are they blocked by what looks like yellow bricks?  If so, that is actually blocks of sulfur.

Furnaces manufactured after 1992 in the U S are required to have AFUE ratings of 78% or more, most furnace models today exceed these minimums. While both oil and natural gas furnaces can now provide significantly more heating power than they could earlier, technological limitations prevent oil furnaces from being able to reach the AFUE scores in the high 90% range that some natural gas furnaces already have. For every percentage point higher the AFUE rating is, the more money you will save over the life of the furnace.

Electric Furnaces

Natural gas is not only considered a clean-burning fossil fuel, but it’s also more efficient than electricity when used for household heating.

Switching from gas to electricity would run counter to many state’s energy efficiency goals because using electricity for heating is about 2 1/2 times less energy efficient than using natural gas, according to Neal Elliott, associate research director at the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, a Washington nonprofit that promotes efficiency.

"The bottom line for use is fuel switching," said Angela Townsend, spokeswoman for PSNC. "If the ultimate goal is to truly promote energy efficiency, an incentive program wouldn’t allow customers to switch over to electricity." It seems buying or replacing an old furnace, the  gas furnace is still the better fuel efficient option.

Geothermal heat pumps are like standard heat pumps, but use the ground rather than outside air to provide heating, air conditioning and, often hot water.

Even cold air contains a great deal of heat; the temperature at which air no longer carries any heat is well below -200 degrees Fahrenheit. That is not too common an occurace.

How Does Geothermal Energy Work?

How does geothermal energy work is a good question, and one which I have often been asked. In this article I must first explain what it is, and then how it can be made to work for man.

Geothermal energy is, literally, the heat of the earth. The heat itself derives from radioactive decay beneath the earth’s surface and, in certain locations, it is concentrated enough and is close enough to surface waters to be brought to the surface by local geological features.

Geo-energy was once thought of as nothing but a thing to wonder at, but it is thought of very differently, now, and is considered by many as one of the most promising forms of renewable energy. It is a renewable energy source because the hot water which conveys it is replenished by rainfall and the heat it brings with it is continuously produced inside the earth.

The great thing about it is that as a form of energy it is versatile and reliable and it produces electricity which generally produces none of the greenhouse gases associated with the combustion of fossil fuels.

So, geothermal energy is the power which can be generated by the harnessing of the heat beneath the Earth’s surface. Deep wells are usually used to pipe steam and hot water from deep within the Earth, up to the surface.

Geothermal heat comes from the magma in the earth’s core, and that itself is heated by the radioactive decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium present in the core. Geothermal energy is present everywhere beneath the Earth’s surface, although the highest temperature, and thus the most desirable, resources are concentrated in regions of active or geologically young volcanoes.

Though the resource is thermal energy rather than a physical substance such as gold or coal, many aspects of geothermal energy are analogous to characteristics of mineral and fossil-fuel resources.

Geothermal energy works for us when, for example, is used as to warm the water in fishing farms. The water is heated, and the warmth makes it more possible for alligators, tropical fish, and other types of fish to grow in seasons and places where they wouldn’t normally.

There are some limitations to it as a form of energy. Unfortunately, the best geothermal resources are concentrated in areas of volcanic activity and are not widely distributed. The earth’s centre is a distance of approximately 4000 miles from the surface and is so hot that it is molten, but when the heat does not rise to the surface it is too far to drill down to the center.

When used in a power station geothermal heat from the hot water from the well causes a ‘secondary fluid’ to turn into vapor, which as it expands drives the turbines to produce electricity. Since the technology used in a binary-cycle geothermal power plant is a closed-loop system, nothing is emitted to the atmosphere. After turning the turbine generator, the working fluid is condensed back into liquid, which is repeatedly vaporized by the geothermal heat in a continuing cycle.

Dry steam and flash steam power plants do emit low levels of carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, and sulfur, although reportedly at only roughly 5% of the levels emitted by fossil fuel power plants. However, geothermal plants can be built with emissions-controlling systems that can inject these substances back into the earth, thereby reducing carbon emissions reportedly to less than 0.1% of those from fossil fuel power plants.

Dry steam plants are used when the rock is very hot. They take steam out of fractures in the ground and use it to directly drive a turbine that spins a generator. Flash plants take hot water, usually under pressure and at temperatures over twice the normal boiling point of water, out of the ground. They allow it to boil as it rises to the surface then separates the steam phase in steam/water separators and then run the steam through a turbine. The turbine also turns a generator, and from that comes the electrical power.

Temperatures in the Central Texas hydrothermal aquifers range from about 90 degrees Fahrenheit to 160 degrees F at depths from 500 to 5,000 feet. Historically these waters have seen some application in spas and therapeutic baths, but might also be developed for geothermal winter heating if used with heat pumps.

If you were to ask the average Icelander; ‘How Does Geothermal Energy Work’. He would probably say; ‘very reliably’ and, ‘our country shows how it can work very well’.

Iceland takes advantage of its incredible geological structure to use geothermal power to their advantage. Recently, it has been reported that 17% of Iceland’s total electricity production comes from geothermal energy. Iceland has reached uniquely high levels in the utilization of geothermal energy, but the resource could be better utilized globally. Iceland is very lucky when it comes to energy as it gets almost all of the rest of its electricity from Hydro-power dams.

Energy from geothermal sources today has been said to amount to less than 0.1 percent of the global world use.

Currently in the US, the author understands that, only four states generate electricity from geothermal resources. In total, this provides electricity for about 3.7 million people.

It works on the principle that heat flows from higher temperature substances to lower temperature substances via conduction or via convection (air currents). Geothermal Heat Pumps take in heat from the earth or water bodies to provide space and water heating. This works since the earth traps nearly half the sun’s energy that is received by the earth.

Ground source heating and cooling will give great comfort and be cost-effective with environmentally-friendly technology which uses our planet’s ability to store energy as heat. Geothermal heat pump systems move the heat from Earth or from water into buildings, or from buildings right back into Earth. A little bit of electricity is employed for operating fans, pumps, controls, and a little compressor.

GHPs utilize the relatively constant temperature of the ground or water several feet below the surface as a source of heating and cooling and are appropriate for both retrofit or new homes. In addition to space heating and cooling, geothermal heat pumps can provide hot water with virtually no additional energy requirements because GHPs don’t create heat; they merely move it from one area to another.

The ground loop piping is estimated to last over fifty years, and even the internal parts have about a 25 year life span. They’re very reasonable for most areas and can use the Earth for heating when temperatures drop and as a heat sink when it’s hot outside.

Quite a number of new residential systems come with desuperheaters, by which excess heat is transferred to the home’s hot water storage tank from the geothermal heat pump’s compressor, providing a highly efficient means of heating water. But in the spring and autumn, during which the geothermal heat pump system does not operate, the desuperheater will not provide hot water. However, because of the geothermal system’s significant advantage in efficiency compared to other water heating methods, ‘full demand’ systems using a separate heat exchanger to meet hot water needs cost-effectively are now being offered by some manufacturers.

Staying warm is important to all of us, so when we go about choosing the right heating system is pretty significant.

Heating Systems: A Quick Comparison

Heating systems come in many different forms and configurations. When choosing one for your home, it is critical that you take several factors into account: efficiency, cost, capability and maintenance. The following is a quick overview to give you some options when planning to purchase or reinstall your current heating system.


Forced Air

Forced air is the most commonplace heating system in place, especially in new construction in most parts of the country. Forced Air Heating heats air through a standard furnace using natural gas, propane, oil or electricity.

The heated air is then pushed through ductwork throughout the house by a circulating fan.

The main advantages to this type of heating system are many. The furnace, depending on size and energy source can create the highest efficiency for certain types of homes.

The unit also can accommodate a dual purpose in that it can also serve as the central source for air conditioning and ventilation as well – the only one of these heating systems that can do so. Forced air can also integrate such add-ons as filtration and humidification units.

Forced air systems can, however, have some drawbacks. The units generally require more maintenance than others. They also require an extensive system of ducts in even small homes. Ducts can take up space, alter designs and can be difficult to reach to clean and service. For small to medium homes, these units generally provide the highest efficiency at the lowest cost.

Radiant Heat

One of the most popular new systems is radiant or ambient heat. Generally, it can come in the form of a hot water tube embedded in a floor or wall – although a radiant heating system can also refer to wood or coal stoves, fireplaces or other fuel-burning heating systems placed in the open.
The advantages to radiant heat are many, but so are the disadvantages. In the case of tubing laid in the floor or wall, the heat is uniform and consistent throughout the home. Architectural design is not affected as it is an "invisible" heat source, allowing for wide design choices. However, if repairs are needed, the system poses severe problems with access and potential structural upheaval.

The heating cycle is slow, as well, so it is not recommended for spaces with rapid, repeating and extreme temperature changes. Ambient heat does not offer a ventilation or air conditioning option at all. Ambient heat offers a high installation cost and a potentially very high repair cost. But the boiler heating the system, if chosen wisely, can offer a very high efficiency factor.

Hot Water Radiant

Usually knows as "hot water baseboard" heating systems, this heating option pushes hot water through tubing (usually copper) installed at the bottom of each room’s walls. The heat is circulated purely through convection, meaning that no ventilation or circulating device is needed, making the system very quiet.

While the system offers high efficiency at low installation cost, the structure can impede certain designs in homes. Repair is not usually a consideration. As with ambient or radiant heat, the choice of the boiler usually determines the efficiency of this particular style of home heating system.

Again, a separate air conditioning and ventilation unit is required.

Steam Radiant

Similar to hot water radiant, steam radiant uses a series of pipes or tubes to warm the home through convection. While the system is still in use in some older construction and in some European homes, this system is not used much in the United States.

Also similar to water radiant, the system can be very efficient when the proper type of boiler is used and powered by an appropriate fuel source which may include propane, oil, electricity or alternate energy. An air conditioning and ventilation system would be a separate system entirely.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHPs) are unlike either Forced Air or Radiant heat entirely – and are perhaps the most exciting new technology offered in home heating systems. The concept of a GHP is to take heat or cold and to displace it by using long pipes running into the ground. Since the ground at the buried depth is normally a fairly consistent (and comfortable) temperature, the heat or cold is displaced, returning a comfortable temperature to the home.

The advantages are enormous efficiencies and savings – in the range of upwards of 70% over other heating or cooling sources. However, the cost and construction can be prohibitive to achieve these efficiencies. Certain home sites may not be able to take advantage of this system, and maintenance can be extremely high.

Which is Right For You?

Each system does offer advantages and disadvantages to each potential homeowner. Taking these all into consideration, particularly selection, maintenance and repair, as well as response time for service or an emergency should all be taken into consideration.

The season seem to change quickly, and soon as we prepare for winter, summer is here, and we have switch our thinking from heating to cooling our home. 

Changing filters is the first must do, and it is simple enough to do it yourself. With temperatures rising and cooling systems running for longer periods of time, it’s the ideal time to take control of your electric bills.

  • Set your thermostat on the highest comfortable setting. If you’re leaving for the day, turn it up a couple of degrees. Do not turn your cooling system off unless you’ll be gone for an extended period of time.  
     
  • Clean or change your filters monthly. Dirty filters can increase operating costs by 20 percent. Don’t block registers and return vents with furniture or drapes.    
  • Use a ceiling fan or portable fan to supplement your air conditioning. A fan can make you feel three to four degrees cooler (and only costs a half-cent per hour to operate) so you can set your thermostat a few degrees higher and save on cooling costs. Use in occupied rooms since fans cool people, not rooms. As a safety precaution, turn off ceiling fans when you leave your home.
  • For central air conditioning systems, keep the fan switch on your thermostat in the "auto" position when cooling. This gives you better cooling and humidity control. Having the fan switch "on" continuously could cost $25 extra a month on your electric bill.  
  • Close blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest part of the day. This keeps the sun’s rays from heating your house.  
  • If you suspect your air conditioning system is not cooling properly, have it checked promptly. A unit that is having operational problems can cause extremely high bills.
  • If your air conditioning equipment is older and less efficient, compensate by being extra careful about temperature settings, hours of operation and filter condition.   
      
  • Use your microwave or countertop appliances for cooking instead of the oven or stove.    
  • Make sure your home is properly insulated. In existing homes, wall insulation may be too expensive to install, so concentrate on attic and floor insulation.

Insulation is rated by thermal resistance, called R-value, which indicates the resistance to warm flow. The bigger the R-value, the bigger the insulating effectiveness. The R-value of thermal insulation relies on the kind of material, its thickness, and density. In working out the R-value of a multi-layered installation, the R-values of the individual layers are added. Installing more insulation in your house increases R-value and the resistance to heat flow.

The usefulness of an insulated wall or ceiling also relies on where the insulation is installed. As an example, insulation which is compressed won’t give you its full rated R-value. Also, the R-value of a wall or ceiling will be rather different from the R-value of the insulation itself because some heat flows round the insulation thru the studs and rafters. With careful design, this short-circuiting can be reduced.

  • Keep your thermostat at the lowest comfortable setting. If you have a heat pump, adjust your thermostat in small increments to avoid the operation of the supplemental heat strip in your system. Energy consumption is much higher when the heat strip is in use. A steady setting on your heat pump thermostat produces constant comfort and minimizes the use of the less efficient resistance heat strip.
  • Keep the fan on your central heating unit on “auto” position. Leaving the fan on “on” can add $25 a month to your heating costs.
  • Install the heating thermostat on an inside wall and away from windows and doors.
  • Clean or replace filters every month. Dirty filters can increase operating costs by 20 percent.
  • By setting your thermostat back 10 degrees at night (8-10 hours), you’ll save 10 percent to 20 percent in heating costs. The lowered thermostat setting saves energy dollars by reducing the length of time the heating system operates throughout the night.
  • Use ceiling fans in winter to distribute heat around a room.
  • Close your fireplace damper when not in use. Consider glass doors to help prevent heat loss when your heating system is on.
  • Make sure registers are not blocked by furniture or draperies.
  • Use insulated or heavy curtains on windows facing the north side of the house. Keep curtains and shades closed at night or on cloudy days.

When entertaining, lower the thermostat a degree or two before the guests arrive. That way, you won’t overheat.

 Air Conditions Systems how do they Work?

Air conditioning or heat pump compressor which compresses low pressure refrigerant gas into a higher pressure, higher temperature gas. Usually the compressor is in the outdoor portion of an air conditioning or heat pump system. The compressor is basically a high pressure pump driven by an electric motor
A condenser or condensing unit: typically a condensing coil inside which high temperature high pressure refrigerant gas flows, and over which a fan blows air to cool the refrigerant gas returning it back into a liquid state (this transfers heat from the refrigerant gas to the air being blown by the fan).

A metering device which dispenses liquid refrigerant into a evaporator coil.
The metering device may be basically a thin section of tubing (a capillary or "cap" tube) or it may be a bit more sophisticated thermostatic expansion valve (TEV ) which includes a temperature sensing control that can open and shut the device against refrigerant flow an evaporator coil or cooling coil: usually the cooling coil is a section of finned into which liquid refrigerant is metered and permitted to evaporate from liquid to gas state inside the coil.

 An air handler and blower unit which provides a fan, that blows building air across or through the evaporator coil. The air handler blower fan unit moves building air across the evaporator coil surface in order to condition building air by cooling it (this removes moisture from the cooler air).A duct system which sends conditioned air from the air handler into the supply ducts, and which then takes air from the ducts and returns it to the cooling system air handler.

Controls and features , which include a room thermostat, electrical switches, fuses or circuit breakers, condensate handling system, and air, filters.

How Do Forced Air Heating Systems Work?
When a technician installs a central forced air heating systems it works like this, a furnace heats the air, which is then, circulated via a system of metal or fiberglass ducts. Technicians must be able to maintain, diagnose, and correct problems throughout the entire system. To do this, they adjust system controls to recommended settings and test the performance of the system using special tools and test equipment. After a furnace or air-conditioning unit has been installed, technicians often asked to perform routine maintenance and repair work to keep the systems operating efficiently. Technicians may adjust burners and blowers and test for leaks. If the system is not operating correctly, they test the thermostat, burner nozzles, controls or other parts to diagnose and correct the problem as needed. During the winter heating season, air-source heat pumps cease to be effective when the outside air temperature falls below 25-35°F. To handle such conditions, they are supplied with a supplemental heating system – usually electric resistance strips to further warm the building supply air after it leaves the indoor coil. They connect this equipment to the ductwork, refrigerant lines, and electrical power source. They may connect electrical wiring and controls and check the unit for proper operation. To ensure the proper functioning of the system, furnace installers often use combustion test equipment, such as carbon dioxide testers, carbon monoxide testers, combustion analyzers, and oxygen testers. These tests ensure that the system will operate safely and at the highest level of efficiency. After making the connections, they charge the system with refrigerant, check it for proper operation and leaks, and program control systems. You will find that heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics/technicians, and installers use a variety of tools, including hammers, wrenches, metal snips, electric drills, pipe cutters and benders, measurement gauges, and acetylene torches, to work with refrigerant lines and air ducts. They use voltmeters, thermometers, pressure gauges, manometers, and other testing devices to check airflow, refrigerant pressure, electrical circuits, burners, and other components. It is possible to fix small components yourself, but if you do not have many of these tools, you may be hard pressed to do the job correctly yourself.
