Other reasons for this defect could be low thermostat setting and presence of dust in the air filters. You can check these systems whether or not they are working properly or not.

Low and high Head Pressure : A heat pump issue with low head pressure can be caused by a scarcity of refrigerant, damage of the compressor and soiled evaporator. On the contrary, high head pressure regularly results from overfeeding of the refrigerant and soiled condenser. Watch these systems and recheck whether the heat pumps start working normally or not.

Freezing of Heat pump : Freezing of the heat pump unit may be caused thanks to a faulty air blower or accumulation of dust and mud in the filters and evaporators. For fixing this problem, check for the defrosting option in your heat pump unit. If there is, you can defrost it and check the compressor for any defects. Do not forget to check the calibration of the thermostat.

Why do most people seem so confused and bewildered about heat pumps? They have been around now for at least several decades, yet the technology behind them seems to mystify so many people. So, I decided to research this subject for myself in order to tell you how – in layman’s terms – these things work

The first thing I should deal with, I guess, is the name itself: heat pumps. Why are they called that? If they are pumps, then what are they ‘pumping?’ Well, the word pump is actually very appropriate (at least to my mind), as pumps move something – water, gas, oil – from one place (like the bottom of a well) to another place (like your sink). And that’s exactly what heat pumps do: they move, or ‘pump’ heat energy. If this is a hard concept for you to grasp, here’s an illustration. Imagine letting a cup of hot tea sit awhile to cool down. Now think about it: What really happened? Well, when a hot liquid cools, the heat energy passes from the hot liquid to the air surrounding it. In other words, heat was ‘pumped’ (moved) from one location to another.

You might not realize it, but even on the coldest day outside, the air contains some heat energy. The same is true for the ground beneath our feet: it has the capacity to store, or hold, heat energy. Heat pumps simply move, or ‘pump’ heat energy from one place to another. When you use a heat pump to heat or cool a room, you are making use of this basic fact of physics.

Let’s see this in action when you decide to cool a room: You install a heat pump, and it’s warm inside. A heat pump will circulate the air in the room, capture the heat energy that is there, and transfer that heat energy outside. Because heat energy has been taken out from the room, you will feel cooler.

 

What do you do in the winter? Simply reverse the whole process: use your heat pump to move heat energy from the outside to your rooms inside (even when it’s cold outside there’s heat energy there, remember?). You will feel warmer in that room as a result.

One very important not: heat pumps, by themselves, do not burn fuel to add heat to a cold room – they simply move it from someplace else. This means that a heat pump is not a furnace, which burns fuel. A heat pump is an energy-transferor, not an energy-producer.

Some heat pumps are called air-source heat pumps, so called because they use the air (surrounding the unit or from a separate unit outdoors) as their source for heating and cooling.

Other types of heat pumps are called Geothermal heat pumps - they draw heat energy from the ground outside (below the frost line) to heat, or pump excess heat energy into the ground to cool. They do this by transferring heat energy through a series of coils that are buried deep in the ground. You may not realize it but below a certain depth the temperature of the ground remains fairly constant year-round.

Cupola furnaces are among the most popular with backyard foundries. Many casters construct their own cupola which proves to be cost effective and highly efficient if done properly. Since cupola furnaces can achieve high melting temperatures they are primarily used for the melting of iron and bronze, though aluminum can also be melted when attention is paid to keeping the temperature low. The primary fuel source for cupola furnaces are coke using limestone for flux.

With most small home foundries, the cupola furnaces are preferred over that of other furnaces for its high melting rates and for how easily the construction of such a furnace can be.

Reverberatory

The Reverberatory Furnaces are commonly found in industrial plants but there have been quite a number of home grown foundries that have used this furnace type with much success. The basic idea of a Reverbeatory Furnace is to use the heat reflecting off a surface, usually brick, to heat the metal, which is aluminum in most cases. This way, the metal does not come into contact with the fuel or the flame. This process is also used in Puddling Furnaces. The name Reverberatory and Puddling are often used interchangeably. By placing the metal in a shallow depression and then directing an intense flame over that depression and to the wall, the heat rebounds to melt the metal. Many casters will adjust the length of the flame since a longer path will mean that the heat will be more intense.

There are many designs for the reverberatory furnace, all of which will include exhaust ports and the rear of the furnace must be able to withstand the intense heat and be able to bounce it back into the chamber.

Bronze, aluminum, tin, and many other ores can be melted in a reverberatory furnace all depending on the construction of the actual furnace and the heat of the flame. This type of furnace has been around since at least the Middle Ages and was used primarily for bronze work.

Electric Arc

Electric Arc furnaces are normally used in Industrial foundries. Most hobby casters do not use these furnaces due to cost, space issues, and a general inconvenience. There are two forms of the electric arc furnace, the direct and indirect.

The direct arc has three electrodes which are used to heat metal by way of the arc. This creates an incredible amount of heat and so water jackets and other cooling devices will be needed for operation.

The indirect arc just uses one electrode and works in much the same way as the direct arc furnace.

Electric Induction

Electric Induction furnaces are becoming all the more popular with large industrial size foundries that enjoy the clean burning and efficiency of an electrical furnace. Copper coils surround the crucible with the metal inside which can reach extremely high temperature suitable for melting most metals.

Rotary

The Rotary style furnaces are hailed for their ease of use being fully or at the very least partially automatic. These furnaces tend to be harder to construct though there are resources and companies online that sell rotary furnace.

The different furnace types do affect the quality of the work being produced, so it is important to keep that in mind as you cast. With a little trial and error, you should find the perfect furnace to fit your needs so you can start building one of your very own.

One of the most important things to maintain on your new cooling unit is the air conditioner filter. Dirt and debris in the filter will reduce the air flow and thus the effectiveness of your conditioning unit. Once your air conditioners filtering unit becomes very clogged with dirt and debris, those dirt particles will bypass the filter and start messing up the air quality along with the machines working parts.

Just like in any machine, the frequency that you change your air conditioning filters depends on the external operating conditions. Traditionally most simple air conditioning unit filters were made from foam, fiberglass or another washable screen type material. As time passes more dust gets trapped in the filter, which is a good thing, but all those extra particles will cause less air flow to get through. By keeping your conditioning unit inspected and maintained at regular intervals will not only save you money in electric bills and repairs but also keep you air quality supremely conditioned.

 You have possibly heard in the news, read on the internet or news paper that the air we need to sustain our planet is getting worse. Did you see China before the olympics? Everyone wearing face mask, beacause just by being outdoors they were exposed to pollution so potent that it was equal to smoking 3 packs of cigarettes  a day. What about the air in side homes in China? Do you think that the people there are wearing masks indoors? The pollution problem is not only Chinas, but the worlds problem. With trees are being cut the deforestation is going to affect all of us. The population is growing which of course leads to the addition of more automobiles on the road, and massive factories to produce all the wares the population demands. The air is starting to become extraordinarily polluted, and the clean air and clean water we take for granted everyday, may soon be unbreathable. The solution to the worlds pollution is going to global efforts from government, and citezens around the world. We  can do our part to help keep our plant clean, and we can also keep ourselves healthier by keeping our indoor air in our homes clean. Pollutants in the home that can also cause acute respiratory problems, and luckly many can be prevented with proper maintance of your homes air filters.

If you live out in the country, natural gas is probably not available. The option open when you live rurally is to have a propane company install a tank. Furnaces from as recently as 20 years ago may offer half of the heat production of today’s more energy efficient models, while releasing significantly more harmful gasses into the atmosphere. You will find that  natural gas furnaces emit  very little gas making  the need for a chimneys are a thing of the past. You can pipe from the basement to the outside as narrow as eight inches is enough for a natural gas furnace to work efficiently. However, with an oil furnace, their exhaust fumes must be heated to a higher temperature in order to rise and escape and this requires that flues be at least 18 inches wide to release harmful gasses properly.

Maintenance

Another question is do you as the home-owner want to deal with accumulated sulfur and soot removal with a yearly furnace cleaning? With an oil furnace an once a year cleaning and service call is really obligatory, as the soot must be removed from the heat exchanger. Also, the oil spray nozzle should to be replaced and the air-fuel ratio adjusted to reduce soot buildup. When the soot builds up, it begins to restrict the flow of combustion gases. If this gets bad enough, it could cause the furnace to stop working, or worse, can send combustion or noxious gases into the house.

Gas and propane furnaces do not have the same maintenance needs as oil furnaces. Gas and propane units need the air filter to be replaced monthly, and it’s a good idea to vacuum the dust off the blower every year, but you may find that gas and propane burners can get a small amount of soot buildup, but they can go 10 or 20 years with nothing more than a wisp of ash. The up keep cost on a gas or propane furnace is going to be lower than an oil furnace in you compare the maintenance costs. The maintenance on an oil burner alone could boost your heating costs if it’s done every heating season as recommended.

Furnaces manufactured after 1992 in the U S are required to have AFUE ratings of 78% or more, most furnace models today exceed these minimums. While both oil and natural gas furnaces can now provide significantly more heating power than they could earlier, technological limitations prevent oil furnaces from being able to reach the AFUE scores in the high 90% range that some natural gas furnaces already have. For every percentage point higher the AFUE rating is, the more money you will save over the life of the furnace.

Electric Furnaces

Natural gas is not only considered a clean-burning fossil fuel, but it’s also more efficient than electricity when used for household heating.

Switching from gas to electricity would run counter to many state’s energy efficiency goals because using electricity for heating is about 2 1/2 times less energy efficient than using natural gas, according to Neal Elliott, associate research director at the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, a Washington nonprofit that promotes efficiency.

"The bottom line for use is fuel switching," said Angela Townsend, spokeswoman for PSNC. "If the ultimate goal is to truly promote energy efficiency, an incentive program wouldn’t allow customers to switch over to electricity." It seems buying or replacing an old furnace, the  gas furnace is still the better fuel efficient option.

 Upgrade

Upgrading your heating equipment to natural gas will save money you money in the long haul. Making the decision to have a high-efficiency gas furnace installed will provide you with quieter and cleaner burning unit. Since a gallon of liquid propane has less energy than fuel oil (about 92,000 BTUs versus about 130,000 BTUs for oil) the actual annual heating cost may be slightly higher than with fuel oil, but the maintenance costs may even it out. Geothermal heat pumps are like standard heat pumps, but use the ground rather than outside air to provide heating, air conditioning and, often hot water.

As they use the earth’s natural heat, they are among the most productive and comfortable heating and cooling technologies now available.

In the winter the normal heat pump system extracts heat from outdoor air and transfers it inside where it is circulated through your home’s ductwork by a fan.

Even cold air contains a great deal of heat; the temperature at which air no longer carries any heat is well below -200 degrees Fahrenheit. That is not too common an occurace.

How Does Geothermal Energy Work?

How does geothermal energy work is a good question, and one which I have often been asked. In this article I must first explain what it is, and then how it can be made to work for man.

Geothermal energy is, literally, the heat of the earth. The heat itself derives from radioactive decay beneath the earth’s surface and, in certain locations, it is concentrated enough and is close enough to surface waters to be brought to the surface by local geological features.

Geo-energy was once thought of as nothing but a thing to wonder at, but it is thought of very differently, now, and is considered by many as one of the most promising forms of renewable energy. It is a renewable energy source because the hot water which conveys it is replenished by rainfall and the heat it brings with it is continuously produced inside the earth.

The great thing about it is that as a form of energy it is versatile and reliable and it produces electricity which generally produces none of the greenhouse gases associated with the combustion of fossil fuels.

So, geothermal energy is the power which can be generated by the harnessing of the heat beneath the Earth’s surface. Deep wells are usually used to pipe steam and hot water from deep within the Earth, up to the surface.

 

Geothermal heat comes from the magma in the earth’s core, and that itself is heated by the radioactive decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium present in the core. Geothermal energy is present everywhere beneath the Earth’s surface, although the highest temperature, and thus the most desirable, resources are concentrated in regions of active or geologically young volcanoes.

Though the resource is thermal energy rather than a physical substance such as gold or coal, many aspects of geothermal energy are analogous to characteristics of mineral and fossil-fuel resources.

Geothermal energy works for us when, for example, is used as to warm the water in fishing farms. The water is heated, and the warmth makes it more possible for alligators, tropical fish, and other types of fish to grow in seasons and places where they wouldn’t normally.

There are some limitations to it as a form of energy. Unfortunately, the best geothermal resources are concentrated in areas of volcanic activity and are not widely distributed. The earth’s centre is a distance of approximately 4000 miles from the surface and is so hot that it is molten, but when the heat does not rise to the surface it is too far to drill down to the center.

When used in a power station geothermal heat from the hot water from the well causes a ‘secondary fluid’ to turn into vapor, which as it expands drives the turbines to produce electricity. Since the technology used in a binary-cycle geothermal power plant is a closed-loop system, nothing is emitted to the atmosphere. After turning the turbine generator, the working fluid is condensed back into liquid, which is repeatedly vaporized by the geothermal heat in a continuing cycle.

Dry steam and flash steam power plants do emit low levels of carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, and sulfur, although reportedly at only roughly 5% of the levels emitted by fossil fuel power plants. However, geothermal plants can be built with emissions-controlling systems that can inject these substances back into the earth, thereby reducing carbon emissions reportedly to less than 0.1% of those from fossil fuel power plants.

Dry steam plants are used when the rock is very hot. They take steam out of fractures in the ground and use it to directly drive a turbine that spins a generator. Flash plants take hot water, usually under pressure and at temperatures over twice the normal boiling point of water, out of the ground. They allow it to boil as it rises to the surface then separates the steam phase in steam/water separators and then run the steam through a turbine. The turbine also turns a generator, and from that comes the electrical power.

Temperatures in the Central Texas hydrothermal aquifers range from about 90 degrees Fahrenheit to 160 degrees F at depths from 500 to 5,000 feet. Historically these waters have seen some application in spas and therapeutic baths, but might also be developed for geothermal winter heating if used with heat pumps.

If you were to ask the average Icelander; ‘How Does Geothermal Energy Work’. He would probably say; ‘very reliably’ and, ‘our country shows how it can work very well’.

Iceland takes advantage of its incredible geological structure to use geothermal power to their advantage. Recently, it has been reported that 17% of Iceland’s total electricity production comes from geothermal energy. Iceland has reached uniquely high levels in the utilization of geothermal energy, but the resource could be better utilized globally. Iceland is very lucky when it comes to energy as it gets almost all of the rest of its electricity from Hydro-power dams.

Energy from geothermal sources today has been said to amount to less than 0.1 percent of the global world use.

Currently in the US, the author understands that, only four states generate electricity from geothermal resources. In total, this provides electricity for about 3.7 million people.

A Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) is an apparatus that extracts heat from below the surface of earth. It works on the principle that heat flows from higher temperature substances to lower temperature substances via conduction or via convection (air currents). Geothermal Heat Pumps take in heat from the earth or water bodies to provide space and water heating. This works since the earth traps nearly half the sun’s energy that is received by the earth.

Ground source heating and cooling will give great comfort and be cost-effective with environmentally-friendly technology which uses our planet’s ability to store energy as heat. Geothermal heat pump systems move the heat from Earth or from water into buildings, or from buildings right back into Earth. A little bit of electricity is employed for operating fans, pumps, controls, and a little compressor.

GHPs utilize the relatively constant temperature of the ground or water several feet below the surface as a source of heating and cooling and are appropriate for both retrofit or new homes. In addition to space heating and cooling, geothermal heat pumps can provide hot water with virtually no additional energy requirements because GHPs don’t create heat; they merely move it from one area to another.

Although the initial cost of a new geothermal system is generally more expensive than a traditional heating and cooling system, the extra investment is returned within five to ten years. The ground loop piping is estimated to last over fifty years, and even the internal parts have about a 25 year life span. Every year about 50,000 new geothermal heating systems are added in the United States. They’re very reasonable for most areas and can use the Earth for heating when temperatures drop and as a heat sink when it’s hot outside.

Quite a number of new residential systems come with desuperheaters, by which excess heat is transferred to the home’s hot water storage tank from the geothermal heat pump’s compressor, providing a highly efficient means of heating water. But in the spring and autumn, during which the geothermal heat pump system does not operate, the desuperheater will not provide hot water. However, because of the geothermal system’s significant advantage in efficiency compared to other water heating methods, ‘full demand’ systems using a separate heat exchanger to meet hot water needs cost-effectively are now being offered by some manufacturers.
