The British Weather: Four Seasons In One Day

The UK’s weather system seems to be completely oblivious to the recent frenzy over supposed global warming. While other more exotic countries wrestle with tornadoes and tidal waves, the UK plods along, making it up as it goes along. This year is a perfect example we have experienced the driest first six months of a year since 1929, the summer has been a sizzler, and yet it only seems like five minutes ago when we were housebound as the country was blanketed in white throughout February.

The UK is renowned for being obsessed with the weather, reflected in the media’s tendency to give periods of extreme temperatures names like ‘The Big Freeze’ or the ‘Barbeque Summer’. Despite the weather being a very popular topic of conversation, we never seem to be content with it. Murmurs of discontent circulated after the non-event that was last year’s summer, yet now we have some heat, we are moaning about sunstroke, stuffy offices, hay-fever and drought. A white Christmas is always highly anticipated yet when we got almost two whole weeks of snow it was maligned for causing dangerous driving conditions or triggering mass school closures.

Poor Mother Nature just can’t win in the UK. Perhaps we need to have a rethink this summer and start perparing ourselves to better deal with our weather rather than mopingabout it. There are a range of products on the market that can make the temperatures that bit more workable for the cool customers and ice maidens out there. Large scale fixed air-con systems may still be priced a little too highly for some, but portable air conditioners may be the perfect solution. Much less exepsnsive than standard units units, these allow you to stay cool in the home or office without having to enter into a debate with others whether it’s too hot or too cold.

Mini fans and a traditional cold flannel are other effective ways to keep your cool this summertime. Of course we could always just enjoy with balmy weather. In a few months time we’ll all no doubt be moaning about having to take a brolly everywhere!
