Spray Foam Insulation Vs Fiberglass and Cellulose

The chief estimate of the helpfulness of any insulation is its R-Value. The solitary goal of insulation material is to keep heat from flowing through it. The better the insulation material, i.e. how much heat it stops, will result in it having a higher R-Value.

When comparing spray on insulation to fiberglass insulation, you will find that the spray foam has a much higher R-value for any given thickness. So you can very easily say that with 2 inches of spray from your roof will be much better insulated than it would with 2 inches of fiberglass batt.

Another insulation type which is known as cellulose fill whether it is blown in or applied by hand, also has a higher R-value than fiberglass insulation of the same thickness. Even though the cellulose fill it is twice what fiberglass insulation is, it still doesn’t compare to spray foam insulation which is almost twice as much as the cellulose fill at the same thickness.

As important as R-value is in how well insulation works, it is not the only thing to consider when choosing the best roof insulation. Moisture will cause both fiberglass batts and cellulose fill to lose R-value. It really doesn’t take very much moisture to do this either as just a slight bit will tremendously reduce the insulating properties.

Neither cellulose fill or fiberglass will be able to give you the 100% caverage that you really need with your insulation The fact that heat is allowed to pass through these gaps is obvious, but these facts are not computed into the R-values of these two materials. This will ultimately bring us to the conclusion that the R-value of both fiberglass batt material and cellulose fill material are both less than what is claimed.

Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

There are no adverse actions of spray foam if it gets some moisture on it. In fact, it can stop minor leaks because, when it is applied, spray foam insulation spreads to fill every gap and seal your roof. If for some reason your home is exposed to pollutants or other harmful airborne things, your foam insulation will effectively keep it out whereas the gaps that are left behind with the fiberglass and cellulose will let it through.

The best part of spray foam insulation is the fact that it isn’t really anymore expensive than your traditional insulation materials.
