Compressors

When you are shopping for a new compressor there are a few factors that you’ll need to consider.[ Even before you can come to a decision on the compressor size you require, you must think about what it will be used for]. [Let's suppose you have a workshop and need an air compressor to drive your pneumatic tools]. Consult the documentation for your tools and find the amount of air necessary for each tool. The manual for a nailer for instance might say “air consumption – 3.0  10 nails per min at 90 psig” This means that this tool requires 3.0 cu. ft. [of compressed air to hammer ten nails/minute at 90 pounds /square inch]. So you need to buy an air compressor with at least this capacity. If you could be using more than one tool at one time (if you have a larger workshop for example) you will need to add together all the individual requirements of your tools.

Type of Air Compressors

Portability and Power Sources

If you will be using your air compressor outside away from a source of electricity you will, of course, need a gasoline powered compressor. For use in a workshop, a compressor powered by electricity will probably be more appropriate. A stationary model would be better for a permanent installation.

Compressor Features

Nowadays compressors driven by pistons are oil free and do not require much maintenance. There should be a a pressure gauge, a pressure release valve and a manual and automatic switch. Check that portable models can be moved around easily with a carrying handle. Stationary compressors must have secure brackets for mounting.

Electricity Generators

Generators are calibrated in watts and when you are deciding which one to buy you will need nto be sure that it will provide enough power for your needs. For sporadic needs during a brief power outage when you just need to power small appliances and lights, a 1500 - 2000 watt side valve generator would be adequate. For longer cuts you should buy an overhead valve with 4000 wattage or higher.

Features of Generators

  • Auto shutdown on low oil levels will protect the engine from damage
  • A spark arrestor is necessary if you use the generator near to combustible material
  • Compression release with a pull start is easier.

Generator Size

To decide on the wattage that you need you should think about what you will run from the generator in an emergency. This could include fridges, boilers, water pumps and lighting etc. In addition any electric motors, for example sump and water pumps, while using a certain wattage while running, will also require up to three times that wattage on starting.

Generator Types

There are 2 kinds of generator, portable or standby. A portable generator can be moved around as required, to use on camping trips or for using tools etc for use away from a current supply. [A portable generator is also useful to power household appliances during an emergency by being temporarily connected to your home's electricity supply then operated manually]. The standby generator is permanently fixed in one place, generally on a concrete base, and permanently wired into the home circuits. Automatic switches are usually turn it on when a power cut occurs.
